1. Statement of General Policy
Impact A&C Basildon (ROBCOR LTD) is committed to conducting its business responsibly, ensuring, as far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety, and welfare of all staff, students, and visitors, and minimizing environmental impact.
The Principal holds overall responsibility for implementing this policy and is supported by the
Directorate and Health & Safety Coordinator. However, health and safety is a shared responsibility: all employees must actively engage in maintaining a safe environment.
The Academy will take all reasonably practicable measures to ensure:
  • Safe equipment, tools, and systems of work.
  • Safe handling, storage, and transportation of substances and materials.
  • Adequate information, training, instruction, and supervision to ensure safety.
  • Risks are assessed, eliminated where possible, or controlled to acceptable levels.
  • Safe access and egress to all workplaces.
Sufficient health and welfare facilities.All employees must comply with statutory duties under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act
1974, including:
  • Taking reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others.
  • Cooperating with the Academy to enable it to fulfill its responsibilities.
  • Using equipment and resources safely, as intended, and reporting defects.
  • This policy applies across all Academy activities, including those conducted on external premises. Specific departmental responsibilities will be clearly defined and reviewed annually.

2. Academy Safety Policy
All staff must familiarize themselves with procedures for emergencies, first aid, and safe working practices. Cooperation is essential to maintain a safe environment.
  • Key measures include:
  • Safety Inspections: Regular inspections by Heads of Department or delegated staff, with records kept and remedial action taken.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Mandatory where risk assessments indicate. PPE records maintained by the Health & Safety Coordinator.
  • Fire Safety: Notices displayed in all teaching and administrative areas. Students are informed during induction. Fire drills occur at least once per term, with records maintained. External premises follow their own fire procedures.
  • First Aid: First aid stations and certified personnel identified. Only qualified personnel may administer first aid. First aid locations and contacts are clearly displayed.
  • New Hazards: All new equipment, materials, or premises undergo risk assessment before use.

3. Safety Reporting
  • Health & Safety Representatives: Departments may nominate representatives to Attend the Health & Safety Committee to report concerns and promote workplace safety.
  • Hazard Reporting: Any potential hazard must be reported immediately to the Head of Department and Health & Safety Coordinator. Work may be paused until risks are addressed.
  • Accidents: All accidents, including near misses, must be reported promptly. Investigation and remedial action will follow.
  • Contractors: External contractors must follow site-specific safety protocols.

4. Individual Responsibilities
Heads of Major Risk Areas:
  • Conduct risk assessments for all activities in their area.
  • Maintain safety standards and support the Health & Safety Coordinator.
Academic & Teaching Staff:
  • Ensure student safety during lessons and activities.
  • Follow Academy safety procedures and legislation.
  • Report accidents immediately and provide first aid where appropriate.
Support Staff:
  • Follow safety procedures and observe Academy safety rules.
  • Report accidents and hazards immediately.
Students:
  • Must follow instructions and safety guidance at all times.
  • Use equipment and materials safely.

5. Fire, Emergency, and Equipment Safety
  • Fire alarms and safety equipment must never be tampered with.
  • Electrical and machinery maintenance must follow manufacturer guidelines.
  • Portable equipment must not create trip hazards.
  • Inflammable materials stored safely, and food/drinks kept away from electrical equipment.

  • 6. Health and Safety Training
  • Staff and students receive ongoing training on health and safety policies and procedures.
  • The Health & Safety Coordinator organizes fire drills, equipment checks, and safety awareness sessions.

7. No Smoking Policy
  • Smoking is prohibited inside all Academy buildings.
  • Designated external areas may be provided where safe.
  • Violations may result in disciplinary action.

8. Stress Management
  • The Academy recognizes that stress results from excessive pressure without adequat recovery.
  • Work-related stress is addressed in partnership with managers l, using HSE guidance.
  • Key areas for managing stress include workload, control, support, relationships, clarity of role, and change management.
  • Confidential support is available through a designated staff member or managers, who can provide guidance, advice, or help access external counselling services if needed.

9. Drug, Alcohol, and Substance Abuse Policy
Drug Misuse:
  • Use, possession, sale, or distribution of illegal drugs is strictly prohibited.
  • Any employee under the influence on Academy premises may face disciplinary action up
  • to dismissal.
Alcohol:
  • Employees must be capable of performing duties safely at all times.
  • Suspected impairment will be assessed by management, and the individual may be asked to leave.
Other Substances:
  • Misuse of any substance endangering self or others is prohibited and may result in
dismissal.
  • Employer Assistance:
  • Employees voluntarily seeking help for substance-related issues will be supported confidentially.
  • Absence for treatment is treated as normal sickness.
  • Managers will maintain contact during treatment and assist with reintegration where appropriate.

10. Review and Consultation
  • The Health & Safety Committee will review the policy annually.
  • All staff must be consulted on significant changes affecting safety or welfare.
  • Feedback and hazard reporting from staff and students are encouraged to continuously improve safety.
