1- Introduction
Impact A&C uses effective behaviour management strategies to promote the welfare and
enjoyment of children attending our Academy. Working in partnership with parents, we aim to manage behaviour using clear, consistent and positive strategies, and with adults modelling positive behaviour.

2- Behaviour Rules
The Academy rules are clearly displayed at every session and are discussed regularly.
Whilst at Impact A&C we expect children to:
● Use socially acceptable behaviour
● Comply with the Academy rules, which are compiled by the children attending the Academy
● Respect one another, accepting differences of race, gender, ability, age and religion
● Develop their independence by maintaining self-discipline
● Choose and participate in a variety of activities
● Ask for help if needed
● Enjoy their time at the Academy.

Encouraging positive behaviour
At Impact A&C positive behaviour is encouraged by:
● Staff acting as positive role models
● Praising appropriate behaviour
● Bonus points rewards
● Informing parents about individual achievements
● Offering a variety of play opportunities to meet the needs of children attending the Academy.

We reward good behaviour through the use of:
✓ Praise from adults and peers
✓ End-of-term certificates
✓ Termly bonus points rewards
✓ Sharing achievements and outstanding work with a parent/carer at the end of each module (every 3 months)

3- Dealing with inappropriate behaviour
It is inevitable that as children develop and learn, there are times when they need support and guidance to understand that their behaviour is not acceptable. Staff at the Academy will try to determine the cause or triggers of the inappropriate behaviour to prevent the situation from recurring.
At this time we adopt an approach to inappropriate behaviour which puts repairing harm done to relationships and people at the centre of our focus. Everyone involved in an incident is asked to reflect on it and discuss their responses and next steps to avoid recurrence. In so doing, they are supported in coming to understand the harm that has been caused to all parties.
This approach encourages those involved to identify ways in which a relationship can be repaired or how they can move forward. By giving pupils this responsibility we are supporting them in developing their own strategies for avoiding and resolving conflict. We also believe that it is important for pupils to reach their own agreement as to how to move forward after a conflict. By involving the pupils in the design of the agreement we give them ownership over it and ensure it is helping them to resolve the situation in their own way. All staff working within Impact A&C use active listening skills when dealing with a conflict. This enables them to draw out more from those involved.

3.1 What we do when a child displays poor behaviour
Staff will always use their professional judgement, common sense and sensitivity when applying
sanctions, based on particular circumstances and individual pupil needs.

3.2 Consequences and Sanctions
Consequences do not work in isolation; they must be balanced with positive support. They do not have to be severe to be effective, must be appropriate for the age of the children and should be ones that pupils do not like. The consequences below are followed by staff according to the nature of the behaviour:
  • Positive reinforcement of desired behaviour
  • Apologies to the victim/s for undesirable behaviour
  • 5 min time out - Not participating in activities
  • Parents contacted regarding repeated incidents

3.3 Responsibilities – to promote good behaviour within Impact A&C, we all have responsibilities:
Children’s responsibilities are:
  • to listen carefully and attentively
  • to value others and treat others with respect
  • to be independent and self-disciplined
  • to obey the instructions of the Academy staff
  • to co-operate readily and constructively with other children and adults
  • to walk sensibly around the class
  • to treat the equipment with care and respect
  • to follow the exact instructions from the teacher for online and in-person classes
  • to only access the lessons materials offered by the teacher during the online classes
  • To actively contribute to the class, on online and in-person

Staff responsibilities are:
  • to value all children and adults fairly and treat them with respect
  • to ensure all children are aware of appropriate behaviour in all situations
  • to encourage independence and self-discipline
  • to endeavour to raise children’s self-esteem and develop their full potential
  • to provide a challenging, interesting and relevant curriculum
  • to create a safe and pleasant environment, physically and emotionally
  • to use praise, and sanctions clearly and consistently
  • to be a good role model
  • to form a good relationship with parents so that all children can see that the key adults in their lives share a common aim
  • to recognise that each child is an individual and have high expectations for all but be sensitive to
  • special needs
  • to make sure every student is individually assisted when required, for both online and in-person classes
  • to ensure the same level of quality of the lessons is delivered on the online lessons, similar to the in-person lessons
  • to ensure that online lessons are conducted in an interactive and supportive environment and flag any potential issues or risks with the Senior Manager and parent

Parents’ responsibilities are:
  • to make children aware of appropriate behaviour in all situations
  • to encourage independence and self-discipline
  • to show an interest in all that their child does at Impact A&C
  • to form good relationships with teachers so that all children can see that the key adults in their lives share a common aim
  • to ensure the student is in a quiet space during the online lessons
  • to ensure the student has the right technology and access to internet during the online lessons
  • to ensure that the student is not distracted during the online lessons
Challenging behaviour will be addressed in a calm, firm and positive manner.
● In the first instance, if the first verbal warning and observation from teacher doesn’t have any influence on the child, the child will be temporarily removed from the activity and placed at a separate table, away from computer/laptop.
● Staff will discuss why the behaviour displayed is deemed inappropriate.
● Staff will give the child an opportunity to explain their behaviour, to help prevent a recurrence. Staff will ensure to offer more options for communications (in writing, privately in the class, outside the class etc.)
● Staff will encourage and facilitate mediation between children to try to resolve conflicts through discussion and negotiation. Staff to encourage communication of formal apologies to the other person.
● If the inappropriate behaviour appears to be as a result of boredom, staff will consult with the child to find activities that more fully engage them.
● Staff will consult with parents to formulate clear strategies for dealing with persistent
inappropriate behaviour.
● We will not threaten any punishment that could adversely affect a child’s well-being (eg
withdrawal of food or drink).

If after consultation with parents and the implementation of behaviour management strategies, a child continues to display inappropriate behaviour, the Academy may decide to exclude the child. The reasons and processes involved will be clearly explained to the child.

4. Physical intervention
Physical intervention will only be used as a last resort, when staff believe that action is necessary to prevent injury to the child or others, or to prevent significant damage to equipment or property. If a member of staff has to physically restrain a child, the manager will be notified, and an Incident record will be completed. The incident will be discussed with the parent or carer as soon as possible. It is recommended for the staff to call the parent immediately.

If staff are not confident about their ability to contain a situation, they should call the manager, the parent and/or, in extreme cases, the police.

All serious incidents will be recorded on an Incident record and kept in the child’s file. This may be used to build a pattern of behaviour, which may indicate an underlying cause. If a pattern of incidents indicates possible abuse, we will implement child protection procedures in accordance with our Safeguarding policy.

5. Corporal punishment
Corporal punishment or the threat of corporal punishment will never be used at the Academy. We will take all reasonable steps to ensure that no child who attends our Academy receives corporal punishment from any person who cares for or is in regular contact with the child, or from any other person on our premises.
Written in accordance with the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2017): Safeguarding
and Welfare Requirements: Managing behaviour [3.52-3.53].
