While your child enjoys two free creative coding/IT lessons (worth £95), you’ll help us shape the future of digital education for Southampton’s next generation.

Conducted independently by Impact Academies & Camps Southampton, a local coding school for children aged 5–17, this study invites around 100 local families across four age groups (5–17)...
Parents take part in two relaxed 15-minute chats while children enjoy free coding lessons.
Part One: explores how parents choose extracurriculars – motivations, challenges, and criteria of selecting an extracurricular activity.
Part Two: gathers feedback on your child’s learning experience of the first lesson, from lesson quality and location to communication and enjoyment.
Results will be used:
Internally, to improve our courses and communication
Shared (in summary form) with local schools and council partners
Published as anonymized insights (with prior consent, if names are used)

What Children Will Learn
We know that parents want to see educational value — here’s exactly what your child will experience during the two gifted lessons:
Ages 5–7: IT Intern – First Steps in Design Thinking and Coding:
- Discover the creative process of Design Thinking by helping “the Tooth Fairy” solve real problems.
- Work together to create diagrams and follow each stage of design to complete mini challenges.
- Learn the basics of visual coding using Tynker, solving puzzles and building fun space-themed animations.
- By the end, they’ll understand what coding means and proudly show off their own first project!
Ages 11–13: IT Senior – Artificial Intelligence & Python Programming:
- Learn the foundations of Artificial Intelligence and explore coding on Turinglab.
- Get hands-on with Python programming, writing your first algorithm and learning debugging and naming conventions.
- Apply problem-solving and logic skills to simple AI-inspired projects.
- By lesson two, students see how coding powers real-world applications — building early STEM confidence.
Ages 8–10: IT Master – Bring Ideas to Life with Scratch:
- Create a personal account on Scratch and learn to build your first animation from scratch.
- Understand what a program and algorithm are, and how to make characters move and interact.
- Explore loops, events, and animation — building your own interactive project.
- These lessons give children their first confident steps as creators, not just technology users.
Ages 14–17: IT Expert – Advanced Python & Game Logic:
- Install Python 3 and PyCharm, work with variables, loops, and conditionals.
- Develop your own “Guess the Number” game.
- Learn to handle data structures (lists, dictionaries, sets), and create a mini database of student grades.
- They’ll finish with practical coding skills used by professional developers — perfect for teens curious about tech, AI, and digital careers.
🕓 Lessons run at Richard Taunton College, Southampton in small groups (max 10 students) with friendly, DBS-checked instructors, Computer Science Students at University of Southampton.
